How it works
Formula
Only basic salary counts: housing, transport and other allowances are excluded. Part years are paid pro rata once you have completed at least one year. Unpaid absence days are not counted as service.
Worked example
- Basic salary AED 5,000, so the daily wage is 5,000 ÷ 30 = 166.67
- 3 years 8 months of service: 21 × 3.667 × 166.67 ≈ AED 12,833
- 6 years 4 months: (21 × 5 + 30 × 1.333) × 166.67 ≈ AED 24,167
Frequently asked questions
Is gratuity based on basic or total salary?
On basic salary only, using your last basic salary. Allowances such as housing and transport, overtime, bonuses and commissions are not included.
Do I still get gratuity if I resign?
Yes, once you have completed at least one year of continuous service. Under the current law, resigning does not reduce the amount the way the old law did. Gratuity can be withheld only in limited cases such as dismissal for gross misconduct.
Does this apply in DIFC, ADGM or to UAE nationals?
No. DIFC and ADGM have their own employment laws, some employers use the alternative end-of-service savings scheme, and UAE nationals are covered by the pension system instead. This calculator is for expatriate employees under the federal law.
